Overview
It is the goal of the Foreign Language/ESL Department that all students become fluent in each language they study. All the communicative skills, including listening, speaking, reading and writing are addressed in each class. Every pupil seeking a Regents endorsed diploma at Cardozo is expected to complete four years of one language. This includes level III, the Regents exam and one additional year, level IV.
The number of students taking Advanced Placement courses continues to be strong, and we continue to offer a full four year sequence in German and a one year course in both Latin and Mandarin Chinese as a second foreign language. We will also offer advanced courses in modern Greek during the Fall term for students who have already passed the Greek Regents exam if there is sufficient enrollment. In addition to requiring the fourth year of language (one year beyond the Regents exam), to insure fluency, a special course in Spanish will be offered to meet the needs of students in Spanish 2.
Students in ESL will receive an additional ESL class each day in levels one and two while all students in the program receive extensive practice to insure their success on the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) and the English Regents examination. There will also be after school tutoring sessions in ESL (Title III) for our students during the Spring Term.
Once again, we will offer courses in the evening in English as a Second Language (ESL) for foreign-born parents.
We anticipate an active Chinese Club, French Club, German Club, Greek Club, Korean Club, Latin American Club, and Foreign Film Club.
