Special Education as Part of a Unified Delivery System, the New Continuum of Services, has been implemented throughout the New York City Board of Education in order to better address the special needs of all students with disabilities in the Least Restrictive Environment. The goal of the New Continuum of Services is to provide all students with educational opportunities that best suit their specific academic, emotional and physical needs.
An integral component of the New Continuum of Services is the Collaborative/Team Teaching Class. The overall goal of these classes is to place special needs students into general education classes with two teachers, one general education teacher and one special education teacher, to provide the supports the special needs students might require. These classes are composed of 2/3 general ed. and 1/3 special ed. students. The number of Collaborative/Team Teaching classes presently consists of six (6) classes: Two English classes, three Social Studies classes, and one Math class.
Smaller classes, 15:1, continue to provide the more structured environment that some special needs students require. The teachers of these self-contained classes
are able to focus on a more individualized program and curriculum that specifically addresses the needs of each student in the class.
Qualified general education students are also able to take advantage of supplemental resource room classes. Classes are limited to 7/8 students per class and provide intense support for all academic subject areas.
The Vocational Program provides opportunities for non-diploma bound students in life skills, job training, and job placement after high school. Transition Linkage Coordinators work with students and families as a source of information and guidance for a variety of specialized programs in and around the New York City area.
The Department of Instructional Support Services continually strives to maintain the dignity and integrity of students with special needs by providing a supportive educational environment.
