Overview


The Health, Physical Education and Dance Department offers a variety of different courses to our students to complete their Health and Physical Education requirements. Ninth and tenth grade students take survey classes where they will be exposed to a variety of different activities. Juniors and seniors will be given a choice of selective courses including: Aerobics, Fencing, Fitness, Soccer, Team Sports, Tennis, Volleyball, Yoga, Dance, Handball and Weight Training. In addition to the required program, electives are offered in stress management, sports medicine and sports law.

Dance majors participate in a challenging program of Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced Dance Classes, including Apprentice Dance and Performing Dance. The program culminates yearly with Winter and Spring performances.

The Health curriculum instills in our students the knowledge to make responsible health-related decisions based on the alternatives available to them. Areas of study in Health Education include: Introduction to Health, Developing a Healthy Personality, Health Emotions, Managing Stress, Mental Disorders, Nutrition, Substance Abuse and Human Sexuality.

The goal of the Health, Physical Education and Dance department is to provide quality Health, Physical Education and Dance to our students with the expectation that the knowledge and skills learned during these classes will prepare our student to live healthy and safe lives.

Physical Education Department Goals
1. Contribute to the physical, social and emotional development of students through physical activity.

2. Students will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness.

Dance Education Department Goals
1. To recognize and acknowledge the ability level of all of our students in order to differentiate instruction to meet their needs.

2. Offer a curriculum that will enable the students to understand and appreciate the choreography, literacy, and history of dance.

3. Develop instructional strategies to ensure that each student reaches their full potential while developing a lifelong appreciation for the Arts.

Health Education Department Goals
1. To recognize and acknowledge the ability level of all of our students in order to differentiate instruction to meet their needs.

2. Offer a curriculum that conveys factual knowledge to the students as well as the strategies they will need in order to make healthy life choices through personal decision making.

3. Develop instructional strategies that will enable each student to apply the skills they learned in the classroom throughout their lives.
