THE SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT
The Social Studies Department is reaffirming our commitment to the infusion of New York State standards into classroom instruction.
History lovers can take Advanced Placement courses in World History, U.S. History, U.S. Government as well as Macro and Micro Economics and receive college credit. Honor classes are offered in most courses.
Staying true to our belief that a sound education should include an interdisciplinary experience, we will again be involved with Carnegie Hall’s program entitled: Global Encounters which will culminate with a Concert highlighting music along the Silk Route.
In addition, students entering their junior year will have the opportunity to expand the classroom experience by taking part this summer in the Global Communications Institute. They will study written and oral skills, workplace and social etiquette and set goals. The purpose is to give our students the skills to succeed in a competitive job marketplace.
We are once again participating in the Smith Barney Quality of Life Research Competition. Students who take part will identify a quality of life issue and based on research, remedy the issue.
We are proud of our status for the past five years as a Blue Ribbon School for Economic Literacy with a passing percentage of over 92%. As such, our students will have access to a wealth of resources. Twelve of our teachers were honored as a result.
There are also other opportunities for students to compete and learn. Legal minded youngsters can participate in the Mock Trial Tournament. Our Debate Team is in place and anticipating their participation in the Lincoln Douglas Debate competition.
